German troops have just invaded the country, but in the rural idyll of the family chateau inhabited by 20-year-old Mellie with her impoverished aristocrat father Alexandre and adolescent cousin Robinson, the war still seems far away # apart from the fact that Mellie's rich and unpopular fiancé André has been drafted into the army. For Robinson and his friends the same age, including the temperamental Bertrand, the war is merely a game they play in the remoteness of the blue island in the lake. Fifteen-year-old Bertrand already feels quite grown-up: when Mellie, his great love, succumbs to his advances, he is introduced to physical love. Bertrand's romantic sense of honor is deeply offended, however, when France negotiates a cease-fire with the Germans. To save his country's honor, he decides to embark on the "military defense" of the blue island: he has finally seen an opportunity to get quits with the absent enemy and to risk his life for the glory of his country. With a few playmates, an old hunting rifle and a home-made flag, he prepares to defend his realm # the blue island # against the might of the German army. When the first German armored cars, under the command of Francophile German lieutenant Frantz von Pikkendorf, arrive on the scene, the children approach them with utter fearlessness. The lieutenant accepts their challenge, seeing it as a game, but then insists that the children "beat an honorable retreat". When Pikkendorf tries to take the rifle from Bertrand, the boy shoots him in the shoulder. This leads to catastrophe: Bertrand is reluctantly shot dead by Pikkendorf. The lieutenant then accompanies the dead Bertrand back home with full military honors. After the war, Pikkendorf returns to France and visits the heroic Bertrand's grave. A phone call from Honza's son, Honzik (Michal Vorel), interrupts his activities, and soon the two, along with the family dog Bingo, find themselves driving away for the weekend, with the consent of both Honza's ex-wife and his boss. Out in the countryside, they stumble upon a beautiful young girl picking apples. She is Marketa and lives in a cottage with her grandmother, who is an herbal medicine woman. Marketa introduces Honza to the village life where he meets various characters such as Ludva the tractor driver, an evil hunter and a homosexual lumberjack. Under the influence of the natural and friendly atmosphere surrounding Marketa and her grandmother, Honza eventually decides to take an extended vacation from work. Fortunately, Honza is able to work on the company project via his laptop and e-mail. He completes the project, but fails to notice that his son has accidentally deleted important company files while trying to play a video game. Honza soon falls in love with Marketa and finds out that she has a finace named Petr in the city. Marketa's grandmother dies and her funeral brings Marketa's parents as well as legal problems concerning grandmother's property and Marketa's future. By the time that Petr comes to fetch Marketa to bring her back to the university, she has already fallen in love with Honza and the two men fight it out over the girl. Honza has only just won the battle and decided to settle down in the village with Marketa when a black company car drives up to the cottage bringing the bad news that the company has lost millions due to Honzik's video-gaming. Honza must go back to the city to repair the damage or face criminal charges and Marketa, all alone now, decides to fulfill the wish of her family and continue her studies at the university. When I shot the film in 1961, the Dani had an almost classic Neolithic culture. They were exceptional in the way they focussed their energies and based their values on an elaborate system of intertribal warfare and revenge. Neighboring groups of Dani clans, separated by uncultivated strips of no man's land, engaged in frequent formal battles. When a warrior was killed in battle or died from a wound and even when a woman or a child lost their life in an enemy raid, the victors celebrated and the victims mourned. Because each death had to be avenged, the balance was continually being adjusted with the spirits of the aggrieved lifted and the ghosts of slain comrades satisfied as soon as a compensating enemy life was taken.
