Innocence
Released in: 2004
Country: Belgium, France, UK, Japan
Starring: Zoé Auclair, Bérangère Haubruge
Tags: bathing girl
Summary: The line between cinematic art and exploitation has rarely seemed finer and nervier than in the French film "Innocence." A parable about the lost paradise of girlhood, specifically those prepubescent years before a girl surrenders to the inevitable bumps and fluids, the film marks the directing debut of Lucile Hadzihalilovic, whose seemingly plotless story centers on an all-girls boarding school in a thickly treed forest of the sort usually inhabited by hungry wolves and little wayfarers in symbolic red hoods. Ms. Hadzihalilovic based her screenplay on a relatively obscure text by the German-born playwright Frank Wedekind called "Mine-Haha, or the Corporeal Education of Young Girls." The fealty of Ms. Hadzihalilovic's translation of the Wedekind text notwithstanding, the dubious vision of utopia put forth in this film finds the girls engaged in an almost militaristic pursuit of physical perfection without commensurate attention paid to their intellect. — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

Jacquot de Nantes
Released in: 1991
Country: France
Starring: Laurent Monnier, Philippe Maron, Edouard Joubeaud, Fanny Lebreton, Julien Mitard, Rody Averty, Hélène Pors, Jérémie Bader, Marie-Sidonie Benoist, Clément Delaroche
Summary: Agnes Varda's 1991 tribute to her late husband, Jacques Demy--Varda's fellow pioneer in the French New Wave movement of the 1950s and early 1960s--is a moving combination of reenacted scenes from Demy's fanciful childhood, clips from his movies (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Donkey Skin), and filmed interviews with him shortly before he passed away. Varda's efforts lead to a touching and evocative portrait of a man who saw, even as a boy, no distinction between his imagination and the more magical traditions of theater and film. The cast of unknown actors portraying Demy and other people in reconstructions of his memories are very good, and the interesting tension between the function of these scenes as storytelling and their inclusion in Varda's larger biographical essay instantly recalls the intensely personal nature of Demy's own lush, ambitious experiments behind the camera.

Black Moon
Released in: 1975
Country: France, West Germany
Starring: Cathryn Harrison
Summary: Malle's weird surrealist fantasy updates Alice in Wonderland into a future society where men and women are engaged in deadly combat, seemingly coexistent with an alternative comradeship of talking rats and enchanted unicorns. Malle offers no explanation for his heroine's visionary odyssey through a world in which all history runs parallel with all realities. Yet a logic is there, even if its reference point is jabberwocky. A black moon, in astrological terms, refers to the time of chaos that preludes some cataclysmic change. And like Malle's other films around this time, Black Moon hopefully posits a social revolution in which such outmoded concepts as innocence and sin will appear in new guises. - www.timeout.com
