 Pretty BabyYear: 1978 Country: USA Actors and Actresses: Brooke Shields Tags: bathing girl Review: A semi-scandal upon its release in 1978, this Louis Malle film is set in a turn-of-the-century, New Orleans bordello and focuses on a girl named Violet (then-child actress Brooke Shields) whose imminent twelfth birthday signals her "readiness" to become a career prostitute. Typical of Malle, the outwardly forbidden nature of the story and relationships within are morally obscured by the immediate experiences and unqualified urges of the characters. The little heroine brings a distinctly youthful and innocent view to the milieu, and the introduction of a photographer (Keith Carradine)--who eventually marries Violet--in the brothel carries the suggestion that there is art and beauty to be explored there. Susan Sarandon is beguiling as Violet's mother, who seems to unfold in the cameraman's presence. He talks about it with his school friends, Kinta and Nyanko, in between their feuding over the affections of classmate Yumi, but can't figure out what to do about it. On a day trip to Kyoto to visit his grandparents, Sei has a chance meeting with Nao, a strong-willed, dream-like girl, while waiting for service in a pickle shop. She quickly becomes the objection of all of this thoughts and desires, but there is one small problem: he doesn't know her name or where she lives. He arranges another trip to Kyoto on the next weekend and finds out her name, Nao Uryu, from the owner of the pickle shop, and starts an investigation around town of all of the Uryu families. He finds her working in her father's coffee shop, but his hopes are crushed when he finds out she is a year older and already in junior high. Sei is undaunted, though, and visits the coffee shop again, this time having a long and telling conversation with Nao's father while she is out visiting her mother. Upon her return, Nao and Sei take a walk around Kyoto, seeing the sights and talking. Sei, who forgetfully left his scarf in the coffee shop, is lent Nao's pink scarf for the walk. There, the lass learns of a plot against the king and escapes with some other girls in an attempt to warn him. While in route, the land's prince is encountered; he falls in love with our young heroine but must learn to accept that she is also fond of another male peer. A unique, interesting adventure/fantasy made in East Germany shortly before the end of the Communist regime. "Rattenzuhausbeiuns," by the way, is translated "Rats-at-home-by-us."
