It's a timeless question, and in Australian director Wayne Groom's tender romantic comedy, it's a question pondered in great detail by a troubled couple as they spend the day on a popular but secluded nude beach. It seems that Simon (Michael Allen) and Marcie's (Eliza Lovell) romance has reached something of a stalemate, and as the dejected pair prepare for a relaxing day of naked leisure, Gail (Bonnie Jaye Lawrence), Paula (Zara Collins), and Jenny (Jennifer Ross) roam the beach discussing lonely Gail's prospects for finding the "perfect" man -- a prospect that doesn't seem too far fetched thanks to the mysterious power of a good-luck necklace given to her by her grandmother. It seems that nearly everyone on Maslin Beach today has their share of issues, from the English aristocrat juggling multiple lovers to the hard-working couple looking for a day away from the office but hounded by the constant cries of their multiple cell phones. Rosta (Boleslav Polivka) is a director whose latest project is an ambitious film that draws parallels between the lives of humans and animals, and as illustration he's cast the members of a local nudist colony, who are to interact naked with a group of apes. However, the cold weather doesn't do much for the esprit de corps of his human cast, while the primates predictably refuse to take direction. Meanwhile, Rosta's backers are demanding more comic relief, the screenwriter argues for a more emotional approach, and Rosta's family shows up unannounced, getting in the way despite their best intentions. Her husband – thinking Eve is depressed – sends her on a holiday to France with her girlfriend Sonja. In the south of France, on the beach, Eve meets Liliane, a young feminist and commune-dweller. Eve feels strangely drawn to Liliane. Eve and Sonja pay a visit to the rural commune in with Liliane lives and works; Sonja doesn't think much of it but Eve keeps returning and seeing Liliane. When returned home, Eve tries to stay in touch with Liliane by mail and she even takes up French courses. At a later point in time, Liliane comes to Amsterdam for a big feminist convention and the two women meet again and spend time together. It is only then that Eve realizes that she is in love with Liliane. It is not without difficulties that Eve comes to terms with her feelings for Liliane.
