Elsa is brought up to believe it is her lot in life to marry another local farmer and raise a family, but as a teenager she becomes fascinated with airplanes, and at 21 she defies her family and enrolls in a school for pilots. While a student, Elsa meets fellow aspiring aviator Erik (Bjorn Kjellman) and they soon fall in love. But Erik dies in a plane crash not long after Elsa discovers she is pregnant with his child; Elsa is crushed, but forces herself to complete her pilot's training. After earning her licensee, Elsa develops an interest in parachuting; she also finds herself taking comfort in the arms of another woman. The man is Gilles (Clovis Cornillac), a provider with the fleshy round face of a baby, who dutifully trudges with antlike constancy between his home and the mine in which he works. Not until this pacific world comes undone by those molten passions do we hear the name of Gilles's wife, a woman whose steady smile speaks to a well-ordered life organized around her beautiful children, her tidy home and, most important, the husband who serves as her sun. The woman, the wife and the mother is Elisa, and she is played by the fascinating French actress Emmanuelle Devos. Ms. Devos has softly blurred features and a smile as enigmatic as the Mona Lisa's. The story is simplicity itself: Elisa, as if waking from a dream, slowly realizes that Gilles has developed a passion for another woman. Harry thinks Michel is a great writer, and he's distressed that Michel hasn't written in years. Harry stays awhile (since his father's death, he's a man of leisure) and sets out to eliminate distractions that might keep Michel from writing. First he buys Michel a car (with air conditioning) and then suspicious things happen.
